Work,

The idea originated from designing a modular furniture piece that can be easily assembled without using any glue, nails, hinges, screws, or other means that do not encourage disassembly and re-assembly. Instead, this stool uses an interlocking mechanism, where the parts tightly interlock with one another. The main challenge in designing and fabricating this stool was to understand how each piece behaves and to build a stool with structural strength.

My goal in designing this bedside lamp was for me to remember the significance of love in my life, as well as my own emotions that I felt growing up as a third culture kid. Aside from the bottom side, all five faces of six gradually-increasing-sized cubes have cutouts that allow light to travel and spread out. Different figures that obstruct the passage of light indicate the sense of difference, instability, and unfamiliarity that I felt when I first went to an international school in Manila at the age of 10. However, the core meaning of this work is in one particular side of light, which is made of only circles without any blocking of light.

The world can feel overwhelmingly full of hate and bias. The connoted message I wanted to express through this lamp is that different races, colors, and cultures do not matter: we all want the same thing, we all want love. "One must abandon all notions of 'otherness' and instead embrace 'togetherness.'"
